Meaningful and Enjoyable Vacation with the EFC Summer Course 2024

The University of Mataram proudly hosted the EFC (English for Children) Summer Course at the Academic Language Support Unit (UPA Bahasa) in 2024, which took place from June 24 to July 7. This program was specifically designed for 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade elementary school students, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn English while enjoying a variety of creative and educational activities over two full weeks. The EFC Summer Course was filled with engaging activities, such as planting, tie-dyeing shirts, making fruit salad, and various art performances, including dancing, singing, and poetry reading. Each activity was designed not only to introduce children to new English vocabulary but also to foster their creative and social skills.

Children were invited to learn about the environment through planting activities while enriching their English vocabulary with terms related to nature and plants. In the tie-dyeing session, children had the opportunity to express their creativity while learning the names of colors and clothing in English. Making fruit salad also taught children about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating while introducing vocabulary related to types of fruit, cooking utensils, and instructions in English. At the end of the program, the children showcased an art performance that included dancing, singing, and poetry reading, helping them build confidence in speaking and expressing themselves in English in front of an audience.

Throughout the two weeks, children not only learned English but also gained valuable benefits. Through various interactive activities, they significantly improved their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. Artistic activities such as coloring and performing poetry provided them with space to express themselves and develop their imagination, which is essential for cognitive development. Additionally, participation in the performance at the end of the program helped them overcome fears and anxieties associated with public speaking, enhancing their confidence in using English. This program also ensured that children learned English in a fun and engaging manner, motivating them to continue their studies. By working in groups and participating in various activities, children also learned to collaborate, share ideas, and appreciate each other’s differences. The EFC Summer Course at UPA Bahasa University of Mataram offered an unforgettable English learning experience, combining language education with art, nature, and nutrition, while helping children develop various essential skills that will be useful in their daily lives.
