Exciting and Interactive: Learning Indonesian with Students from Shangrao National University at UPA Bahasa UNRAM

On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the University of Mataram (UNRAM), through its Language Learning Unit (UPA Bahasa), hosted a delegation from Shangrao National University (SRNU). The visit centered on a Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing (BIPA) program, designed to introduce the Indonesian language and provide a basic understanding of its daily use. The delegation, consisting of 10 students and 2 lecturers, participated enthusiastically in this program. The Indonesian language lessons were facilitated by two tutors from UPA Bahasa, Miss Wulan and Miss Tya, who guided participants through fundamental topics, including vocabulary, basic phrases, and simple grammar essential for everyday communication.

Miss Wulan initiated the session by introducing the SRNU students to basic vocabulary, such as greetings, interrogative words, and commonly used verbs. The lesson covered essential aspects of communication, including how to exchange greetings, introduce oneself, inquire about others’ well-being, and express needs or desires. To enhance their learning experience, students were encouraged to practice conversational dialogues with their peers, helping them internalize and retain the material more effectively.

A highlight of the session was the interactive teaching methodology employed by the tutors. Both Miss Wulan and Miss Tya ensured that the lessons went beyond theoretical explanations by actively involving the students in various activities, such as short dialogues and speaking exercises in diverse scenarios. As a BIPA instructor, Miss Wulan adopted a hands-on approach, incorporating role-playing techniques to accelerate the students’ grasp of Indonesian. This method allowed participants to apply their newly acquired language skills in practical, enjoyable settings.

Furthermore, Miss Wulan paid special attention to pronunciation, patiently modeling correct articulation and guiding students through repeated practice. Her friendly and patient demeanor created a comfortable learning environment, boosting the participants’ confidence in using Indonesian during the sessions.

This program not only introduced the Indonesian language to foreign students but also served as a platform to foster cross-cultural connections between Indonesia and China. The students from Shangrao National University showed great enthusiasm and eagerness throughout the sessions, despite it being their first experience with the language.

UPA Bahasa UNRAM hopes that this activity will further promote the University of Mataram and Indonesian culture on the international stage. By organizing similar programs, UNRAM aims to strengthen its collaborations with foreign universities and contribute to enhancing cross-cultural understanding, particularly in the fields of language and communication.
